Do you listen to your body to determine your hunger cues? Then you may be participating in intuitive eating. Intuitive eating is based on internal needs, without focusing on calories, specific foods to eat, or even eating schedules. Even though weight loss is not a goal of intuitive eating, it has been used to help people lose weight. It has also been used as a treatment strategy for those with disordered eating patterns. Here we go into depth about some of the core principles of intuitive eating.

No Restrictions

In intuitive eating, people are encouraged to listen to their bodies, both physically and emotionally. This means paying attention to signs like hunger and fullness. You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want. There are no rules about what foods to eat or how much to eat.

Focus on Hunger Cues

Sometimes, we feel hungry not just because our bodies need food, but because we see tasty food, smell something yummy, or feel stressed. Intuitive eating helps you understand why you feel hungry. The goal is to eat based on what your body really needs, not just because of outside things. If you eat when you’re feeling emotional, it can make you feel guilty for having a lack of self-control. Intuitive eating encourages you to take care of yourself and feel good about your body.

Intuitive Eating Strategies

There are ten basic principles of intuitive eating that can be found within the first link in the sources below. To name a few:

  1. Honor Your Hunger

    1. Keep your body fed to avoid uncontrolled eating during extreme hunger

  2. Feel Your Fullness

    1. Listen to body signals that tell you you’re comfortably full and no longer hungry

  3. Challenge the Food Police

    1. Throw out the rules that diet culture has created: calling certain foods “bad” or “good”

  4. Respect Your Body

    1. Accept your genetic blueprint to feel better about who you are. All bodies deserve dignity.

What does the research say?

More studies are being done on intuitive eating. Some small studies have shown that following intuitive eating can improve mental health and may help reduce binge eating and restrictive eating. However, more research is needed to learn about other effects of intuitive eating.
