How You Can Use AI to Help Reach Your Nutrition Goals

What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming more present in our everyday lives. The technical definition of artificial intelligence is “technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities” (IBM). Chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini from Google, or Microsoft Copilot are gaining more popularity, and with each passing day, their data and information sources grow. You may be skeptical of artificial intelligence, but it could be a helpful resource for meal planning or recommendations.
How Do I Use Artificial Intelligence?
With AI, it is important that you are very specific in your prompt. It is designed to learn from you, basically taking on your voice the more you use it. Let’s say you’re looking for ideas for how to cook your favorite vegetable, a sweet potato. If you need more guidance alongside our resources here at Good Measures, you can ask a chatbot for ideas. Again, be sure to be very specific about your preferences, your dietary restrictions, your medical conditions, and any other details you want incorporated into AI’s response. AI is not meant to replace a provider, but can be a helpful resource in idea and recipe generation.
Can You Give Me an Example of a Specific Prompt?
“Hi. I am a 56 year old male with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. I am looking for ideas to incorporate more fiber foods into my diet. My Registered Dietitian told me to incorporate sweet potato, lentils, and other beans. I dislike pinto beans, but other beans are okay. Can you give me ideas for how to incorporate these ingredients into specific dishes? Please include other fiber food recommendations and keep in mind my condition.”
Considerations for Using AI
It is important to be careful when using AI. Sometimes these chatbots can make up information, provide medically incorrect information, or misread your prompt. A paper found that AI bots can be prone to errors in providing meal recommendations. At this time, AI is intended to be used as a supplemental resource. If you choose to use AI as a resource for idea generation, consult with your coach to verify that the recommendations you are getting from AI are acceptable for you. It is important to look into the sources of information used by the chatbot. Always ask for the chatbot to cite its sources and do your due diligence to make sure the information you are getting is from a reputable source.
